Mix Challenge Liner Notes
I chose Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker because it’s one of my favorite albums and one of the best albums I know about love, relationships and heartbreak. And I love me some love songs. In making the mix, I initially struggled quite a bit because my song choice responses were skewing too personal but not in a productive way – it was limiting my choice of genre’s, bands and songs – I was too close to the subject. Then I had an idea! Every Sunday night I am consumed by another duo’s heartbreak… Carrie Mathison and Nicholas Brody of Showtime’s Homeland. Why not use them as my inspiration? Clearly, I’m obsessed with the show, their relationship and depending on the day, yes, I’m a shipper of Brody & Carrie. It made a lot of sense to project these two star crossed lovers against Ryan Adam’s tour de force album.
Well, at least that was the key for me, because once I did all the songs started to click and fall into place. The mix is kept pretty general to limit “spoilers” for people that don’t watch the show. The mix is not about specific events, but about the two characters themselves, their emotional connection, and their heartbreaks throughout the show. If I explained my song choices one by one, I definitely would be giving away spoiler-y information, so I’m not doing that.
Hope you enjoy!
