Liner notes
1. CANON: I discovered the Replacements in the last couple of years but I would have loved them if I bothered to listen to them when they were making music.
2. FOMO: Sarah Shook is my spirit animal. (also AF)
3. FML: Pretty much every Ruston Kelly song is sad because he tells the story of hard, substance abuse fueled living. But this song talks about singing a sad, sad song and it mentions Parker Posey.
4. DUPE: I had a really hard time thinking of a cover song for this mix, and then I realized while singing this song to myself in the car that I’ve been singing it to myself in the car on the regular since it came out in 2002. I love Bruce, but this version knocks the air of me. (Also FOMO)
5. Y2K: there were endless better songs that came out in 1999-2000, but this one reminds me of my life during that era–or at least, many of the people who surrounded me during that era, I say with love.
6. LMGTFY: the words of this song are pretty straightforward when you look them up but I couldn’t figure out what the F he was saying. Also, it still sounds to me like he is saying “do you remember the way HE made you feel?” which was why I was like, what the F is he singing about. I do love this song, though.
7. RULZ: the last decade witnessed my introduction to Eurovision, the amazing European song contest that rocks my world every May. Lots of over the top 80s-like pop, and this one is one of my faves.
8. OOTD: this is one of my comfort songs. Most of my other comfort songs also involve drankin’. Go figure. (Also DUPE, which I didn’t realize until I was looking up this song on Spotify to include it).
9. AF: This song also samples Ms. Lauryn Hill’s Ex-Factor which was getting heavy play by me in 1999.
10. IMHO: great gets me right there lyrics, great build up, great guitar distortion. This song has everything I love in a song, and I can’t stop listening to it. (also TL)
11. TL;DR: Not really sure why this song gets my freebie when there has been so much music I’ve listened to over the last 20 years, but I love it, and I play it a lot.
12. BRB: Had to get in some of my beloved Rock en Espanol. Aterciopelados had their most recent comeback this year. I went to their show and it was amazing. (also FOMO, RULZ).
13. OBV: I have a slew of indie girls I listen to right now–soccer mommy, snail mail, boy genius, the Beths, Caroline Rose. Adrianne Lenker gets the feature here.
14. NFLX: love this local band. (also OBV)
15. TFW: OK, this is a shameless plug of my band, featuring yours truly wailing “nobody cares”
16. BFF: one word: Mavis.
17. New phone, who dis: I forget about this song, and I hear it, and it makes me happy. On repeat.
18. TY: I had a really hard time with this category, but this seems like a compliment to me. (also BFF)
19. TL: this is my favorite too long song in rotation. I’m not afraid of long songs, tho.
20: YOLO: a story that is told all too often, but not enough by white people. Lean into it.
